Guide to Diabetic Retinopathy

March 20, 2016 0
It has been observed that untreated Diabetes can result in severe complications for eyes in the future. The term which is used for damage to eyes is “diabetic retinopathy” where retinopathy conveys damage to the retina. It is a systemic disease which affects a lot of diabetic patients suffering since 10 years or more. But research indicates that at least 90% of these new cases could be reduced if there was proper monitoring of diabetic eyes and their attentive treatment over these years.

Elevated levels of blood glucose can damage the body in various ways, including harming the blood vessels in your eyes. Diabetes can affect the lining of the blood vessels in your eyes, causing them to thicken and develop leaks. Poor circulation in the retinal vessels can compound these problems by causing the production of fragile new vessels.

Treatment, which depends largely on the type of diabetic retinopathy you have and how severe it is, is geared to slowing or stopping the progression of the condition. The type of laser treatment used to treat diabetic retinopathy is called photocoagulation. Many people having laser treatment have a very little visual impairment. Others who may have early or moderate maculopathy and proliferative retinopathy will also benefit from laser treatment. Laser treatment has revolutionized retinopathy treatment. Together with effective screening, good blood glucose control and blood pressure, it can successfully maintain vision. Ideally, laser treatment should be done early in the course of the disease to prevent serious vision loss rather than to try to treat serious vision loss after it has already developed.

Researchers are studying new treatments for diabetic retinopathy, including medications that may help prevent abnormal blood vessels from forming in the eye. Some of these medications are injected directly into the eye to treat swelling or abnormal blood vessels. These treatments appear promising, but more study is needed. Along with Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment, you can expect excellent treatment like Femtosecond Laser Cataract Surgery and Pediatric Ophthalmology with Centre for Sight.
